Standing on a Shrinking Island
It happened on the factory floor first.
The work was physical, repetitive, measurable.
Of course it would be automated.
Then it happened to the back office.
Computers could follow procedures better than humans and they never needed coffee breaks.
Nobody was surprised and the knowledge workers watched all this from a "safe" distance because their jobs were "different".
They didn't move boxes or file papers.
They read, synthesized, analyzed, advised!
They turned information into insight!
You couldn't automate judgment and you couldn't automate expertise.
You couldn't automate the human who reads a hundred sources and tells you what it all means.
That was the story, anyway.

I was VP of Marketing and Communications at Blockstream during a period when coverage was everywhere. Funding announcements, product launches, the usual chaos of a growing company in a controversial industry.
My job involved understanding how the world perceived us: What narratives were forming. Where we needed to engage.
So I did what knowledge workers do.
I bought the tools, configured the dashboards, set up the alerts.
Then I read. And I synthesized. And I reported.
Every morning I'd open my inbox to find a bunch of mentions that were mostly bots, AI slop, automated replies, content farms scraping other content farms.
The tools gathered everything as long as our name was in it.
So this became the job: filter the noise, find the signal, synthesize it into something useful, prepare it for the rest of the company to see.
Great.
I became a human filtering machine.
A very expensive one.
And I started to wonder: how long until someone builds a system that does this faster and cheaper than me?

The knowledge worker's moat was always access and synthesis.
Access meant you could get information others couldn't.
You had the subscriptions, the sources, the network, the tools.
Synthesis meant you could connect dots, spot patterns, turn noise into narrative.
IMO, both moats are collapsing.
Access is now trivial. Everything is online.
Every report, every article, every dataset, every "hot take".
But something else is emerging.
Somewhere between the old knowledge worker and the AI that's eating their job, there's a different way to operate.
IMO it's not about reading more or synthesizing faster. It's about seeing differently.
The flood of information isn't a problem to be managed.
It's a landscape to be mapped.
It has structure: patterns of coordination, velocity of spread, divergence between audiences.
It has leading indicators that show where narratives are forming before they form.
The professional who learns to see this structure isn't competing with AI.
They're doing something AI can't do yet.
So I started building my own system because the tools I paid for couldn't show me what I needed to see.
I didn't need another dashboard that counted mentions. I needed to know when multiple outlets published the same narrative within hours of each other - coordination that suggested a story was being pushed.
I needed to measure how fast something was spreading and where it had come from. I needed to see the gap between what communities believed and what mainstream media was saying.
These weren't features anyone was selling.
No tool did this.
And the reason for that is that the industry was still optimizing for the old model: aggregate more, surface more, and let the human do the filtering.
But the human doing the filtering is the job that's disappearing.

Knowledge workers won't survive by getting better dashboards.
The transformation is more fundamental.
The definition of the job has to change.
The old knowledge worker was valued for consumption and synthesis: how much they could read, how well they could summarize, how clearly they could report what happened.
The new knowledge worker will be valued for detection and action: how early they can see patterns forming, how how accurately they can read where narratives are heading, how effectively they can position before the crowd arrives.
One is a librarian. The other is an Intelligence Operator.
The librarian organizes and retrieves.
Important work, but increasingly automated.
The Intelligence Operator scans the horizon and calls out what's coming.
That job gets more valuable as the landscape gets noisier.
I call this way of working being an Intelligence Operator.
The term matters less than the shift it represents. You stop measuring yourself by volume. Who care how many articles you read, reports written, dashboards checked.
You start measuring yourself by accuracy: patterns detected, timing called, actions taken before they became obvious.
You stop serving your tools and start commanding systems.
The system does the gathering, the filtering, the monitoring. You do the seeing.
By the way, this isn't about working harder.
The people drowning in information are already working hard. It's about working at a different level of the stack.
The knowledge workers who cling to the old model will be gradually automated.
It won't happen overnight.
It'll happen the way the factory floor emptied: slowly, then all at once.
The junior analysts first. Then the mid-level synthesizers. Then the senior people who defined their careers by how much they could read.
The ones who survive will be the ones who transformed before they were replaced.
Who understood that the game changed.
Who stopped competing with machines at consumption and started doing what machines can't do yet.
Seeing patterns. Detecting coordination. Mapping the structure underneath the noise.
Acting on intelligence instead of drowning in information.
